Rotary Joint Standards Explained: ISO, DIN, ANSI, and JIS

Published Sep 24, 2026 6 min read

Why Standards Matter in Rotary Joint Selection

When you specify a rotary joint, you’re not just choosing a product — you’re choosing a set of performance guarantees, safety requirements, and dimensional compatibility. Standards provide that framework.

But here’s the challenge: there’s no single global standard for rotary joints. Instead, different standards apply depending on your market, industry, and application.

The Four Major Standards

ISO (International Organization for Standardization)

Relevant standards:

  • ISO 9001:2015 — Quality management systems. Not specific to rotary joints, but every reputable manufacturer should hold this certification.
  • ISO 5208 — Pressure testing of valves (sometimes applied to rotary joints)
  • ISO 7005 — Flange dimensions (relevant for flanged rotary joints)

What it covers: ISO standards focus on quality management, testing procedures, and dimensional compatibility. They’re the most widely recognized globally.

When to specify: Always require ISO 9001:2015 certification from your supplier. For flanged connections, ISO 7005 ensures dimensional compatibility.

DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung)

Relevant standards:

  • DIN 281 — Rotary joints for steam (German industry standard)
  • DIN 282 — Rotary joints for thermal oil
  • DIN 2401 — Pressure ratings for components

What it covers: DIN standards are specific to rotary joints in steam and thermal oil service. They define pressure-temperature ratings, connection dimensions, and testing requirements.

When to specify: If you’re in Europe or supplying European equipment, DIN standards are the reference. German-engineered machinery often specifies DIN-compliant joints.

ANSI (American National Standards Institute)

Relevant standards:

  • ANSI/ASME B16.5 — Pipe flanges and flanged fittings
  • ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 — Pipe threads (NPT)
  • ASME PTC 13 — Performance testing (general)

What it covers: ANSI standards focus on connection dimensions and thread types. The US market uses NPT threads and ANSI flange dimensions.

When to specify: If your equipment uses NPT connections or ANSI flanges, specify ANSI-compliant rotary joints. Most US-built machinery follows ANSI standards.

JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards)

Relevant standards:

  • JIS B 2073 — Flanges for steel pipes
  • JIS B 0202 — Pipe threads (parallel)
  • JIS F 7300 — Marine rotary joints

What it covers: JIS standards are similar to DIN but with Japanese-specific dimensions. They’re relevant for Japanese-made equipment and Asian markets.

When to specify: If you’re servicing Japanese machinery (Fanuc, Mitsubishi, etc.) or operating in markets that follow Japanese standards.

How Standards Affect Rotary Joint Selection

Connection Dimensions

The most practical impact is connection compatibility:

Standard Thread Type Flange Dimensions Market
ISO G (BSP) ISO 7005 Global
DIN G (BSP) DIN 2501 Europe
ANSI NPT ASME B16.5 Americas
JIS G/BSP JIS B2073 Asia

Critical point: A rotary joint with DIN flanges will NOT bolt directly to an ANSI flange. Always verify the connection standard before ordering.

Pressure-Temperature Ratings

Different standards use different pressure classes:

  • ISO/DIN: Bar or MPa at specific temperatures
  • ANSI: Class ratings (150, 300, 600, etc.)
  • JIS: 10K, 20K, 30K, etc.

Always convert to your local standard’s notation when specifying.

Testing Requirements

Each standard has different testing protocols:

  • ISO: Hydrostatic testing at 1.5× design pressure
  • DIN: Similar to ISO with additional leak testing
  • ANSI: Hydrostatic test + optional pneumatic test
  • JIS: Hydrostatic testing per JIS standards

Ruitus Compliance

Ruitus rotary joints are manufactured to meet the requirements of all four major standard families:

  • ISO 9001:2015 certified — Full quality management system
  • DIN-compliant connections — Available for European markets
  • ANSI-compatible options — NPT threads and ASME flanges available
  • JIS dimensions — Available for Asian markets

When ordering, specify your required standard and connection type. Ruitus can manufacture to any of these standards from the same engineering base.

Practical Tips for International Buyers

  1. Always specify the standard, not just the size. “2-inch flange” means different things in DIN, ANSI, and JIS.

  2. Check your equipment first. Look at the existing joint’s nameplate or measure the connection dimensions.

  3. Consider your market. If you’re exporting equipment, use the standard of the destination country.

  4. Ask for documentation. Reputable manufacturers provide material certificates, test reports, and dimensional drawings per the relevant standard.

  5. When in doubt, choose ISO. It’s the most universally accepted and ensures broad compatibility.

Need Help with Standards Compliance?

Navigating international standards can be confusing. Ruitus provides standard-specific documentation and can manufacture rotary joints to any major standard family. For a complete guide to selecting the right rotary joint for your application, see our Rotary Joint Selection Guide.
